Mackenzie Rose, of Wallingford, had been undergoing chemotherapy as part of her treatment for Aplastic anemia, a blood disorder that she had only recently been diagnosed with, her mom, Elizabeth Raiburn told the outlet.
She died on Saturday, Aug. 27, after suffering a brain bleed during a bone marrow transplant. Despite this devastating loss, a patient in need has gained a new lease on life.
Mackenzie's kidneys ended up being a perfect match for the friend of Martino Cartier, the founder of the Wigs & Wishes organization, according to the outlet.
"There will never be enough words that can express my gratitude and love for my angel Mackenzie Rose who has given me the gift of life," Anthony Soriano wrote in a Facebook post.
"Everyone but Liz says "The chances of being a match are ZERO!" But [Martino] pushed forward knowing time is of the essence!"
The next morning, the Brooklyn, NY man was rushed to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he received his new kidney, and "was given the gift of life."
Soriano goes on to say how the organ is functioning perfectly, with no signs of rejection.
"My beautiful babygirl is truly amazing," Raiburn said on Facebook. "She will be remembered forever."
She asked those to fulfill her daughter's dream by supporting the foundation that also gifted Mackenzie "an amazing wig with no questions asked."
